I was interested in contrast during the making of this collection, from more hard edged numbers to a neo-folk style of song writing. For some tracks, it was back to sitting down with a guitar and note pad and for others I just plugged in and improvised a bass line or guitar part, and built the song with successive layers as I have done for many years.This is a transitional album in some ways, away from attempting a more mainstream style toward embracing a low-fi rough and immediate process where errors and pops have as much place as practiced riffs.
Some songs are about moments of significance, the death of a client (Portrait and a Sign); A homeless man hung with sign (After a While Crocodile); intimated domestic violence (Fighting Forms) and a remembered pilgrimage to Red Beach (Flower Umbrella). Other tracks use everyday life, mixed emotions and vagrant ideas as their source.
