Jacob was the central character in a series of short stories I wrote intended as a segway to a proposed novel that was eventually abandoned. I used fragments to piece together the spoken word sections, although the story in this form is non-sequential. For 20 years the project has remained in an incomplete state, ambitious and flawed. Some of the songs have haunted me, and seem to encapsulate my most introverted self, holed up in a studio.
A number of the songs were penned during a weeks stay at Benalla for their Easter Arts festival in which I had a large showing of "hungry country" landscapes. This was a formative experience, fuelled by wine and dope, allowing my imaginings to take route and to assume the Jacob persona, a kind of failed artist seeking redemption but finding only fragments of a wild look.
