about

The Inside Place album was a conscious attempt to bring my music in to line with my paintings. The subject was the interior environment in terms of both physical and psychological space. In the paintings I invented a kind of hieroglyphic language that sought to illustrate life style systems and daily routines – aspects of living in and around things, places and various states of being; a cosy framework and habitat to eat, think and dream in. A house needs keeping like a dark pet, taking on the feelings of its inhabitancy. Dark corners glow fiercely in imagination, leaving one frightened by the last thoughts before sleep. Having indulged in the experience, and of course remembering vividly, childhood insecurities, the aim was to capture the mood and to delve beneath the surface appearance of the utilitarian object to discover some deeper significance. To achieve this I tried to create images that could be read like a book with layers of meaning imbued with subliminal content. I was influenced by the opaque prose of Patrick White that seemed to suggest fathomless depths of human perception and the exquisite pain of existence; also the music of Joy Division, a seminal rock band of the post punk era that pulses and taps into a subliminal consciousness, evocative of the emotions that swell against the structures of a controlled environment.

Other influences at this time were Stockhausen; various forms of "world music" and "New Age" recorded from late night radio and writings by Albert Camus and D.H. Lawrence.

The recording of this set was far from straight forward. For every track here another two remain in archive as near misses or complete flops. The year was spent largely holed up in my studio in central Victoria, painting and making music like someone possessed. My mood was very dark and so what sprang forth was equally as sombre. Ideas smouldered or welled up inside before bursting out, though my actions seemed slow motion like, everything taking time - to think and ponder.
Initially I separated instrumental pieces from songs remastering with sound edit 16 software, but this didn't seem to capture the true nature of the project. Here I have reunited both, marrying atonal murkiness with songs that resinate with big feelings.

I finished the year with back to back exhibitions, and even played a tape of music at one opening, although it didn't seem to make much of an impression. Used in the recording were a classical and electric guitar; violin; recorder; keyboard; synthesiser; piano accordion; and a variety of acoustic oddments including a metal tray (once used for developing photos), tins, suacepan's and buckets, finger piano; wind chimes; bongos and drying rack!

about

Euie b Graham Canberra, Australia

Ending formal lessons on violin, I began writing songs in 1992, graduating to a four-track cassette recorder shortly after, and the addictive journey of composing then recording was entrenched. I continue, assimilating influences and forging my own way. I shy away from performing, I write, record then move on. I would love others to listen and enjoy, and hold out hope that I May find an audience. ... more
