Rust Intaglio grew out of a disparate set of songs written over a three-year period from 2008 to 2011. The first songs started as quick recordings on my phone, ranging from basic chord progressions to more complex ideas. Many of these are now lost, others contributing to the out-take collection “A Dolls House”. Themes emerged connected to news stories – the discovery of a world war one digger in France; rising sea levels and a legendary Canberra window wiper. Other songs were derived from diary entries scribbled on a train in my university days. I tried to consciously steer the away from songs about my immediate circumstances to create an imagined landscape of passion and pain. Recording began in earnest in the first few months of 2010, but it took another 12 months to finally bring the songs together to form a complete album. The finished work is probably best defined by its relentlessly bleak nature, which makes it a difficult listen. Although I like individual tracks in isolation, listening right through is a challenging process.
